Dear Parents and carers,
Last Thursday Father George presided over our Opening Mass. He sang; we sang and our Kindergarten students welcomed the Gospel with colourful silk scarves and wonderful smiles. Year Six students were inducted as leaders and proudly stood before the student body to pledge their oath of leadership. Thank you to the many parents from K to 6 who came to celebrate Mass with us and start our new school year.
Also can I thank the many parents who were able to make it to our Parent Information Night last Tuesday. The gathering was informed about our continuing emphasis in Literacy and Numeracy. The opportunity to connect with teachers in a casual format was positive and supportive for all as we begin working with students this year. Parent teacher interviews will be conducted in Week 8 this term. Outside of that week, parents may always request an interview with their child's teacher by contacting the front office to arrange an interview time.
Last Friday, I went to Tumut for the Western Region Swimming Carnival with ten excited students. They swam in numerous events over the day and I was so proud of their enthusiasm and encouragement of each other. Most successful on the day were William Smith (Boy Runner Up 12 year old category) and Daniel Korn who now travel to Narooma as part of the Western Region Swimming Team in early March. Thank you again to the many parents who transported and supported their children on the day.
St Mary's has registered in the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. The day is scheduled for Friday 15 March. Students will be lead through some lessons in class and encouraged to commit to the slogan of Bullying, NO Way. More updates about this initiative will be promoted in class, the newsletter and Facebook.
Also on this note we are having a special assembly tomorrow, Wednesday 20th February at 2:00pm from Country Rugby League Development Officer Dean Whymark. He will be presenting information on Cyber Safety and promoting the sport of rugby league at the same time. Dean is a great presenter and usually has some local stars with him to promote the sport.
And, finally this week we have the pleasure of having Kaye Lowe visit our school to work with students and teachers in literacy. Kaye is an Adjunct Professor at the Australian Catholic University and she has written many teacher resource books in literacy. This is Kaye's third year at St Mary's. She loves coming into our school and seeing the progress students are making and sharing her knowledge with teachers. But the feeling is mutual as teachers also love Kaye's support and look forward to hearing practical ideas to improve your children's learning outcomes.
Have a good week everyone.
