Dear Parents,
Last Friday, staff and students acknowledged Bullying No Way day. It was a great to highlight the message through discussion, art work and a colourful 'dress up'. Our culture of kindness builds a safe environment that nurtures our students into become their best selves. I was part of several class activities over the day and know that students understand this important message, and in fact they want to talk about it so to understand why some people make poor choices. Why are some people mean? As student grow and grapple with peer pressure, personal differences, discrimination and social media let us pray and trust that our students always remember this critical message Bullying is no Ok. Let us also know our vitally important role as their first role models.
Crunch n Sip
One of the best initiatives to occur in our classrooms, in regard to health and nutrition, is 'Crunch n Sip'. Students from K-6 bring water bottles and fruit into class every morning for a mid morning break. Thank you parents, for providing students with a fruit snack every day. It guarantees a healthy balance of a daily dose of fruit which is so important. For students who forget their fruit we often have a fruit basket in the foyer for students to access for Crunch n Sip. Teachers will often pop a bag of apples or mandarins into the basket because we know how valuable this nutrition break is. If parents have extra fruit please feel free to add it to the basket as well.
School Photographer
This Thursday the school photographer will be here. Even if you are not intending to purchase photos this year, please return the envelope. All students will need to be dressed in full summer uniform for the photo shoot.
Cross County
This Friday students turning 8 years this year and older will practice for Cross Country at the Batlow Golf Club. Friday 1 April we will run Cross Country to see which students proceed to the Western Region in Gundagai 29 April. Parents are welcome to come and join us at the Batlow Golf course. Events will start at approximately 9:30am.
Staff PD
On a final note, Ms Amy Buckmaster and Ms Sarah Collins attended professional development in Gundagai yesterday. They were in a workshop on High Impact Teaching Practices combining with teachers from St Patrick's Gundagai and St Joseph's Adelong. They appreciated the opportunity to network with colleagues and discuss teaching practices with Dr Michael Roberts, the leader in Coglearn. The next workshop in HITP is scheduled at St Mary's in Term 2.
Have a lovely week everyone.

SATURDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER
As a result of the recent severe weather in many parts of NSW, some mosquito-borne illnesses have begun to appear in areas of the state. There has been advice recently about cases of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in commercial piggeries in locations in NSW. NSW Health has advised:
- local infection risks are likely highest among people working at and/or living close to piggeries which have tested positive for JEV and people who engage in outdoor activities (e.g., camping, fishing, hiking) near significant mosquito populations, particularly near waterways
- the mosquitoes that transmit JEV are most active at dawn and dusk and into the evening.
Schools and their communities should be aware of mosquito bite preventative measures they can take to prevent JEV and other mosquito-borne diseases:
- Cover-up with a loose-fitting long-sleeved shirt and long pants when outside.
- Apply mosquito repellent to exposed skin.
- Take special care during peak mosquito biting hours, especially around dawn and dusk.
- Remove potential mosquito breeding sites from around the home and screen windows and doors.
- Take extra precautions when travelling or camping in areas with a higher risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
For more information refer to NSW Health’s fact sheets Mosquitoes are a health hazard fact sheet and Japanese encephalitis fact sheet as linked below.
